Hanoi boasts nearly 6,000 historical sites and over 1,350 craft villages, showcasing its vast potential for developing cultural, craft villages, and spiritual tourism. Many travelers are drawn to Hanoi for its rich cultural, historical, and natural resources. Additionally, Hanoi Tourism 2024 emphasizes that the city is a safe destination, known for its friendly locals, affordable prices, and great shopping options.
Tourism Growth in Vietnam
From 2020 to 2024 and in the following years, the tourism sector in Hanoi continues to face many challenges. However, with the proactive efforts of the City Party Committee and the People’s Committee, Hanoi’s tourism is gradually emerging as one of its key strengths. It not only contributes significantly to the capital’s budget but also plays an important role in the development of Vietnam’s tourism industry.
According to the Hanoi Department of Tourism, from 2020 to 2024, the number of tourists visiting Hanoi is projected to grow at an average rate of 10.1% per year, with each subsequent year exceeding the previous one and surpassing the target growth rate of 8-10% per year. Notably, the average growth rate for international visitors is expected to reach 21.2% per year, achieving the international tourist arrival target two years ahead of the 2024 goal.
Additionally, Hanoi is currently a member of the Asia Tourism Promotion Council (CPTA) and the Asia-Pacific Cities Tourism Organization (TPO), among others.
In 2009, Hanoi was honored by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as a “City of Peace.” Since then, it has become a key hub for connecting global values, facilitating regional and international initiatives aimed at promoting peace, stability, and development. The capital’s relationships with neighboring countries, as well as with regions around the world, have strengthened and expanded. In 2019, Hanoi officially joined the UNESCO Creative Cities Network. This means moving beyond traditional tours that have been offered for years and creatively incorporating new, more attractive destinations and experiences.

Hanoi aims to offer a wide range of high-quality tourism options that align with market demands and global trends. Beyond traditional forms of tourism—such as cultural heritage and spiritual tourism—the city is also embracing community-based tourism. For example, the ancient village of Duong Lam allows visitors to immerse themselves in rural life, with around 10% of households providing authentic experiences. Other notable community tourism destinations include Bat Trang Pottery Village, Dao Thuc Water Puppet Village, and Lai Xa Photography Village. There’s also a focus on upgrading key craft villages, enhancing pedestrian areas, improving tourism infrastructure, and beautifying the city, especially in urban districts and the historic Old Quarter.
