But Thap Pagoda and Dong Ho Village

But Thap Pagoda

But Thap Pagoda, or Ninh Phuc Pagoda, located in But Thap hamlet, Dinh To commune, Thuan Thanh district, Bac Ninh province, is one of the oldest and most famous pagodas in northern Vietnam. Built-in the 17th century under the Le dynasty, the pagoda was founded by Zen master Huyen Quang, one of the three patriarchs of the Truc Lam Zen sect. Despite numerous renovations and expansions, the pagoda still retains its ancient and unique architectural features, highlighted by the “Dinh” architectural style consisting of main structures such as the Front Hall, Incense Burning House, Upper Pavilion, and Bao Thap (Precious Tower). The most notable artistic works at the pagoda include the statue of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva with a thousand eyes and a thousand hands, a wooden masterpiece carved in 1656, and Bao Thap Tu An, or Bao Thap Thien Hoa, resembling a giant pen symbolizing wisdom and loftiness.
