The video, shared with the caption “When a foreigner meets a Mekong Delta local!”, runs over five minutes. It shows an older foreign cyclist traveling through a rural area when a local man greets him in Vietnamese:

“Are you traveling alone? Where are your kids? Come to my house, have a meal before you go! It’s right nearby—come in, come visit!”

The tourist responds in English, clearly a bit confused. Even though they don’t understand each other’s words, through gestures, he gets the message and accepts the invitation.

After that, the foreign visitor was treated to coconut water, fruit, rice paper snacks, music, and even got to experience feeding fish and walking across a monkey bridge. The two sat and “chatted like old friends,” even though neither understood what the other was saying.

The clip quickly racked up nearly 6 million views across social media, delighting viewers and prompting widespread sharing. Many were excited by the tourists’ unique experience in the Mekong Delta, while others praised the locals’ warm, simple, and genuine hospitality toward visitors.

Watching the clip, user Ly Cuong commented: “When a Western foreigner meets a Western Southerner!” Another user, Fat foot My Phuong, wrote: “That’s so Mekong Delta—meeting someone and immediately inviting them to eat!” Angel added: “This clip is so adorable!”

Speaking to Thanh Nien, Mr. Thanh Son (45 years old), commonly known as Tony Duok—the local man in the viral clip—said he was surprised that his simple invitation to the foreign guest drew so much attention.

Tony Duok shared that he filmed the clip recently after randomly spotting a foreign man cycling around and exploring the Mekong Delta near his home in Ngu Hiep commune, Dong Thap (formerly Tien Giang).

“My family runs a small eatery serving Mekong Delta specialties. From time to time, foreign visitors come to explore the local culture. Inviting them to a meal is just my way of showing the hospitality and warmth of people here—I hope they leave with good memories and a positive impression of this place,” he shared.

Although he doesn’t speak English, Tony Duok said he tried to communicate through eye contact and body language, and luckily, they still understood each other. He admitted he felt a bit shy watching the clip, but he also sees it as a happy memory.

His wife, Ngoc Nhi (37 years old), also warmly helped him welcome the special guest. The couple said that besides the experiences shown in the video, they even prepared a home-cooked meal. However, the foreign visitor couldn’t stay to eat, as he wanted to continue exploring other places.

The story highlights the genuine hospitality of Tony Duoc and the lasting impression that simple, heartfelt moments can leave on visitors.
