Hue (Thua Thien Hue) aims to become Vietnam’s first bicycle city by 2030. Developing bicycles contributes to improving the traffic environment, ensuring people of all ages, including residents and tourists, can travel safely, comfortably, and conveniently by bicycle.
On September 29, 2023, the People’s Committee of Hue, in collaboration with the German Development Cooperation (GIZ) and HealthBridge Canada in Vietnam (HBV), jointly organized a workshop “Consultation on the comprehensive bicycle traffic development plan for Hue City.
Hue aims to become Vietnam’s first bicycle city
According to Mr. Truong Dinh Hanh, Vice Chairman of the People’s Committee of Hue City, with the support of the German Development Cooperation and HealthBridge Canada in Vietnam, the city has drafted a comprehensive plan for bicycle traffic development. The draft plan was developed through large-scale surveys, assessing the current use of bicycles in Hue, identifying advantages and challenges in bicycle traffic development, and evaluating the level of bicycle usage.

The draft plan sets the goal for Hue to become Vietnam’s first bicycle city by 2030. Developing bicycles contributes to improving the traffic environment, ensuring people of all ages, including residents and tourists, can travel safely, comfortably, and conveniently by bicycle. This transformation aims to shift urban mobility patterns and reduce reliance on personal motor vehicles.

Regarding infrastructure, the draft plan proposes dedicated bicycle lanes with protection, segregated bike lanes marked with paint, shared bicycle lanes with safety measures, a network of bicycle paths, and main bicycle routes.
Hue enjoys several advantages as one of the locales making relatively successful strides toward becoming a bicycle-friendly city, akin to those found globally. Over the years, Hue has developed a comprehensive bicycle transportation infrastructure. Residents of Hue now have access to safe, beautiful cycling routes that harmonize with nature. The city hosts professional cycling competitions and movements that attract a diverse range of participants. Bicycle ownership among residents has increased, fostering a growing cycling culture within the community.

During the workshop, delegates focused on discussing and exchanging views on key elements of the draft comprehensive plan, including vision, objectives, solutions for building a bicycle network, enhancing safety for cyclists, developing public bicycle systems, and outlining the implementation roadmap and resources required.
Following the gathering of feedback from delegates and experts from HealthBridge Canada in Vietnam, the German Development Cooperation, and local agencies in Hue, revisions and finalizations to the draft plan will continue. The plan is scheduled for submission and approval in November 2023, paving the way for implementation starting in 2024.
