The Resurgence of Ca Tru Art in Hanoi: A Tale of Strength and Revival

With over thirteen years since its UNESCO recognition as an Intangible Cultural Heritage in urgent need of safeguarding, Vietnam’s Ca Tru art has endured challenges and overcome obstacles to assert its robust vitality. Through the relentless efforts of skilled artisans and the support of art enthusiasts, this unique traditional chamber music heritage has experienced a powerful revival, garnering significant interest from the youth and witnessing a growing number of Ca Tru clubs.

Hanoi, with its rich historical and cultural charm, stands as a focal point for Ca Tru art. Among the renowned venues, Ca Tru Thang Long at 146 Tu Hoa and 28 Hang Buom are shining examples of traditional musical culture. Here, historic melodies are vividly reenacted, captivating audiences with their depth and allure.

Ca Tru transcends being merely a musical art form; it is an integral part of Vietnam’s cultural heritage. It intertwines with festivals, customs, beliefs, and philosophical tenets of the people.

While the exact origins of Ca Tru remain unknown, it is believed to have emerged in the 15th century and flourished thereafter. Formerly associated with guild activities and specialized spaces for performing artists, Ca Tru often took place in village communal houses, temples, craft guild houses, and taverns. It not only enriched the cultural life of communities but also participated in the ceremonial activities of feudal states.

Its diverse and rich repertoire has attracted interest from various segments of society, from intellectuals to art enthusiasts. In Ca Tru performances, attendees not only listen but also play a crucial role as “judges,” expressing their evaluations, empathy, and talents through the art of drumming.

Though regarded as a scholarly art form, Ca Tru has continuously adapted and evolved throughout history. With UNESCO recognition and support from the international community and passionate artisans, Ca Tru is experiencing a vibrant resurgence.

Overall, the vibrancy and development of Ca Tru are not only a source of pride for the Vietnamese people but also an inseparable part of the world’s cultural heritage. Through tireless efforts, Ca Tru is affirming itself as an endless source of inspiration and a symbol of sustainability and creativity.
