United Nations Encourages Bicycle Use for Sustainable Development

The United Nations has encouraged the use of bicycles for sustainable development through a resolution adopted by the 193 members of the General Assembly. This resolution views bicycles as important in combating climate change and promoting sustainable development.

1. Integrating bicycles into transportation systems: Member states are encouraged to incorporate bicycles into public transportation systems, in both urban and rural environments, in developed and developing countries.

4. Focusing on cycling in development strategies: Member states are encouraged to pay special attention to cycling in their development strategies, including bike-sharing services and policies at international, regional, national, and local levels.
5. World Bicycle Day on June 3: Since 2018, the United Nations General Assembly has designated June 3 as World Bicycle Day. Today, the UN calls on countries to encourage cycling to improve health, protect the environment, and stimulate social development.
6. Enhancing road safety and infrastructure: The resolution calls for enhanced road safety and the development of transportation infrastructure aimed at ensuring the safety of pedestrians and cyclists.
7. Implementing bicycle-friendly policies: Countries are encouraged to adopt policies that support and encourage cycling and to promote a culture of cycling.
